So-called Plex Method – The wrong way

If I am not wrong, you would have seen tons of sites explaining the traditional Plex method. Well, if you are baffled what is this plex method, then read this paragraph. Plex method is nothing but installing Plex on PS4, instead of installing Kodi on PS4. This method doesn’t actually install Kodi, instead, it installs Plex. Plex is a software that doesn’t support illegal streaming. And you can’t stream all the content for free on plex. So Plex can’t replace Kodi. And above all, Sony won’t support piracy by providing support to Kodi on PS4.
The main reason why you can’t install Kodi on PS4 directly is “PS4 is a console(device) and Kodi is a software“. Kodi is designed to run on an OS (Windows, Linux, Android). I hope you are getting my point. So you would need an OS installed on your PS4 to run Kodi on PS4.

With that being said. we’ve found another method to install Kodi on PS4. The PS4 console doesn’t support “EXE file”. So you can’t install windows on your PS4. So we will be installing Linux (Ubuntu) followed by installing Kodi on the ubuntu. To install Ubuntu, you need to create a “standalone ubuntu USB”. In simple terms, you need to make a bootable Ubuntu USB, that is capable of running the OS on the pen drive. Don’t use Live USB. It will work but your files won’t be saved. So have to install add-ons each and every time. Follow the steps carefully, to create a fully functional Ubuntu USB.
For that, you need a 16GB flash drive, Ubuntu OS and Linux Boot Loader for PS4. Since we are going to run Ubuntu on PS4, you need the PS4 bootloader to detect the bootable device.

To do this, you need to install virtual box (A virtual machine software to run Ubuntu OS). Here we will be installing Ubuntu OS on a USB drive using the Virtual machine. By doing so, a complete Ubuntu OS will be installed in your USB drive.

Steps to create USB bootable Ubuntu

Open virtual box software and select “New”
Give any name for the virtual machine.
Select the Type as “Linux” and version as “Ubuntu 64 bit”.
Select next and allocate memory size for the virtual machine. (minimum 2GB) and Click Next.
Select “do not add a virtual drive” in the next option. And select next.
Since we are creating a VM(Virtual machine) without HDD, it will pop a warning message. Click Continue.
Now the new Virtual Machine will be created. Now, navigate to Settings option.
Select storage from the left side, click on “empty”. Now add ubuntu iso from the virtual optical disk file.
Select the Ubuntu disk image.
Now check the storage tree, you will find the iso name. And select USB from the left pane.
Now add the storage location as USB drive by clicking on the add drive icon at the right side.
Now “Start” the Virtual Machine. It will install all the files on the USB drive.
Now ubuntu starts, follow the further steps to install Ubuntu on USB flash drive.
Select install Ubuntu. Don’t give Try. (it will be installed as live OS)
Now select continue.
Since we will be creating multiple partitions, select something else. And select continue.
On the next screen, check the device under “device for bootloader information”. And select continue.
If it doesn’t show free space in the previous step, select “/dev/sda” and choose the new partition table. (you may have a different name).
Now place the cursor on the free space label and click on “+” to create a new partition.
Next step is you need to make the USB detectable by PS4. For that, you need to add the PS4 bootloader to the USB drive. The bootloader file size is around 20MB. So select the size as 20MB. And make the partition as primary, and file system as FAT32. Select mount point as windows, since we will be adding bootloader file from windows.
Next, we need to create a partition to install Ubuntu. Keep the remaining as it is. Select the partition as primary and file system as the EXT2 file system. It doesn’t need any mount point, so select “/”. And select OK.
Check whether there are two partitions. One to add bootloader via windows and others to install ubuntu. Place the cursor on the ubuntu partition and click install now.
It will ask for the swap area, select continue.
Since we are creating two partitions with a different file system. it is asking for confirmation. Select Continue.
Now select your region.
And select the language. And click continue.
Enter the username and password. Make sure to select log in automatically.
Now your Ubuntu will be installed. Wait till the installation completes.
After installation, your screen will look something like this. Press Enter.
Now the process is complete. shutdown the VM. Go to File > Close.
Select Power off the virtual machine, and select Ok.
Now your windows will automatically detect the 20MB partition. Which we created to add the bootloader.
Open the drive and add the files. You can download the bootloader file from here.

Thus you have successfully made a standalone Ubuntu USB drive. Now insert the USB drive in your PS4. And follow the below steps.

Steps to install Ubuntu on PS4

Insert the USB Drive, and navigate to settings.
Now select user guide.
Select PS4 WebKit playground. Its one of the toolkit to jailbreak/root PS4. Follow these steps to exploit or jailbreak your PS4.
Select the Linux loader from the main window.
Now you will see the Linux console. Sometimes you might directly get ubuntu screen. You need a USB keyboard for further steps.
If you still are not having ubuntu screen, follow the below steps. Type “fdisk -l”. It will list the available partition.
Now we are going to mount the Ubuntu partition to the main console. Type mount /dev/sdb2 newroot/ and select Enter.
Now we will be switching the root. Type exec switch_root/newroot/ /newroot/sbin/init
Now you will get the following message. Press “S”.
Now the ubuntu will be loaded.

Installing OpenELEC is really quite straight forward once you know how. There are only a handful of steps:

Download and uncompress the latest version of OpenELEC

I do this bit using my main Windows desktop. Firstly we want to download the latest version of the OpenELEC software from http://openelec.tv/get-openelec For my NUC I'd download the latest 64bit non-diskimage version.

The file comes down as a compressed .tar file. Personally I use 7-zip to uncompress .tar files and this software can be downloaded from http://www.7-zip.org/download.html. Once you've installed 7-zip we can now extract the downloaded OpenELEC .tar file and once it has extracted you'll see a bunch of files. The file we're interested in is called create_installstick.bat

Next, insert a blank USB thumbdrive into your desktop computer and double-click the create_install.bat file. It should show a screen similar to this:

As it says, the thumbdrive will be wiped during this process. You MUST make sure you choose the correct drive letter for your USB thumbdrive! On my machine it's D so I'd enter D: as shown on that screen and then press [Enter].

Once it's finished building the USB thumbdrive remove it and insert the thumbdrive into the machine you'll use for Kodi.

You need to boot the Kodi machine from the USB thumbdrive. On my NUC I need to go into the BIOS for this and to get into the BIOS I repeatedly press the F2 key when it's booting. Yours may be F2, F10 or Esc or similar.

Once you've got it to boot from the USB thumbdrive you'll be presented with the OpenELEC installation menu. Choose the first option: Quick Install of OpenELEC and when prompted to Enable SSH Server on start choose Yes.

Once the installation is complete it'll take you back to the first menu. Remove the USB thumbdrive and select Reboot from the Menu and let the system boot.

What you do and do not change from the default installation is obviously down to personal preference but here's what I change:

Disable RSS Feed

On the Kodi screens you'll see a ticker feed running along the bottom. To disable it go into SYSTEM then Appearance and on the Skin screen uncheck the Show RSS news feeds option.

Change Language & timezone

My server is constantly downloading TV shows and adding these shows to my server. To get them to show up in my Kodi library I have to manually update the library. You can get Kodi to update automatically each time it starts up by going into SYSTEM then Video then Library and then enable the Update library on startup option.

Enable LiveTV

I've got a quad TVtuner in my server which is constantly recording TV shows. Kodi acts as a front-end to the TV tuners enabling you to watch Live TV. To enable this feature go into SYSTEM then LIVE TV and on the General tab check the Enabled option. The first time you do this it'll prompt you to enable the PVR Add-on. I personally use Tvheadend HTSP Client so choose this from the menu. Then click Configure.

Tvheadend hostname or IP address. This is the IP address of your server. For the username and password use the same one you choose when you installed TVHeadend.

Leave all other options at their defaults and click OK. Then click Enable. Once it's pulled in all the TV channels you'll be able to watch live TV, pause, rewind and record TV as well as watch previous recordings. I wouldn't say it'll replace your existing PVR but the Kodi installation is getting better all the time.

YouTube

YouTube, and other channels, are built into Kodi so all we need to do is enable them. So, from the menus go into VIDEOS then Video Add-ons then Get More... and scroll down to YouTube and lastly choose Install.
Alternatively you can go into SYSTEM-> Add-ons -> Get Add-ons -> All Add-ons -> Video Add-ons and then choose YouTube

BBC iPlayer, ITV Player

If you live in the UK you'll be able to use BBC iPlayer and ITV Player on Kodi although it's a bit more involved to get working than for YouTube. It's possible to use these services if you live outside the UK but you'll need to ask Google for help with that!

So, assuming you're in the UK then head to the following website and on the right hand side of the page download the zip file of the latest version of the BBC iPlayer http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:IPlayer

Save this ZIP file to a USB thumbdrive. Next insert this ZIP drive into your Kodi client and install it by going into SYSTEM then Add-ons and choose the Install from zip file option. Navigate to the USB thumbdrive and select the ZIP file you've just downloaded. You can now find BBC iPlayer from the Enabled Add-ons option under Video Add-ons.

ITV Player available from http://xunitytalk-repo.googlecode.com/svn/addons/plugin.video.itv is installed using the same steps as for BBC iPlayer.

Adding Video Add-ons to the main menu

Once you've installed BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and YouTube etc accessing them can be a bit involved. With a simple tweak they can be made available from the main menu. So go into SYSTEM then Appearance then Skin then Settings. Scroll down to Add-on Shortcuts and in the Home Page Videos Sub-menu options add each of the add-ons you've added above.

Adding the Context Menu for Kodi on the VRC-1100 Remote Control

On my remote there is no ContextMenu option by default. So to add it we simply remote onto the Kodi client and type the following:

So, I've remapped the power button on the remote so it logs the current user off and takes you back to the login screen.
